Chatham Saw Mill, located on Chatham Island in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is the largest and oldest saw mill in Asia. Here are some key highlights:
- History: Established in 1883, the mill was initially set up to meet the local requirements for sawn timber and construction materials. It was destroyed during World War II but was later revived.
- Operations: The mill processes logs, primarily Andaman Padauk, to produce sawn timber. It handles around 12,000 to 13,000 cubic meters of logs annually and produces about 5,000 to 6,000 cubic meters of sawn timber.
- Tourist Attraction: The mill is a popular tourist spot where visitors can observe the entire process of converting raw wood into finished wooden planks. There's also a bomb pit from World War II that has since filled with water.
- Visiting Information: The mill is open from 8 AM to 2:30 PM, except on Sundays and public holidays. The entry fee is Rs. 10 per head, and guided tours are available for Rs. 50.
